How long does it take to get an EIN?

US residents with an SSN or ITIN can apply online at irs.gov and receive their EIN instantly, within minutes of completing the application. Phone applications (call 267-941-1099 for international) take one business day. Fax applications using Form SS-4 take approximately 4 business days for a response. Mail applications take 4 to 6 weeks. International founders without an SSN must use fax or mail, making their timeline 4 days to 6 weeks. The IRS processes applications Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 10 PM Eastern Time. Once assigned, your EIN is active immediately and you can use it to open bank accounts and file taxes.
