What is a DBA (Doing Business As)?

A DBA (Doing Business As), also called a trade name or fictitious business name, allows your LLC to operate under a different name than its legal registered name. For example, if your LLC is registered as 'Smith Holdings LLC' but you want to operate a bakery called 'Sweet Dreams Bakery,' you would file a DBA for that name.

DBA filing requirements vary by state and county: some states require filing with the Secretary of State ($10-$100), others with the county clerk ($10-$50), and some require both. A DBA does NOT create a new legal entity or provide additional liability protection — it is simply a name registration. Common uses: operating multiple brands under one LLC, using a shorter customer-facing name, or meeting bank requirements (many banks require a DBA certificate to deposit checks made out to your trade name). DBAs typically need to be renewed every 5-10 years depending on jurisdiction.
