Every movement starts with a location.

There is an obvious contradiction in a company that argues the future is distributed, agent-run and borderless, and then insists on an address. We are comfortable with it, because the two things are not in tension — they are the same argument from both ends.

What you build for people you cannot see, you get wrong. Not badly wrong — subtly wrong, in the way that only shows up when someone sits next to you and says no, that is not the part that is hard. So the house is where the correction happens. Founders come, they show what they built, they say what broke, and the next week the product is different because of it.

West Portal is not the part of San Francisco anyone writes about. It is a residential street with a train that goes downtown. That is roughly the point: the room is a living room, the demos happen on a television, and nobody has to be invited by someone who was invited by someone else.

The work itself is spread across time zones — engineering, filings, support. But the argument about what to build keeps coming back to one room, and it has an address.
