Two companies built and sold, and a cheque in more than two hundred others since. Lovie is the third — and so is the room it came out of: the demo nights, the open door, and the habit of handing the screen to whoever turned up with something to show.

    • RemoteTeam → Gusto
    • MovieLaLa → Snap

He built RemoteTeam and sold it to Gusto, and MovieLaLa and sold it to Snap. Since then he has written cheques into more than 225 startups, which mostly means he has watched several hundred people start a company from zero and has a fairly unsentimental view of which parts are genuinely hard.

Almost none of the hard parts are the paperwork. The paperwork is just expensive, slow and confusing enough to stop people — particularly people outside the United States, who are told they need an address and a social security number they do not have. That is a solvable problem being sold as an unsolvable one, and it is the reason Lovie exists in this shape.

The rest of what he thinks is written out in full rather than summarised here — it is the argument the company is built on, not a founder note.

The other thing he brought is the room. The demo nights, the open door and the habit of handing the screen to whoever turned up with something to show predate the company; Lovie grew out of them, and they are still where the product gets corrected.

Start the company.

That is the whole point of the argument above.
